TN PHCC Elects Kay Keefe President
How did you get started in your business?
I started working for my dad when I was 15 years old at our parts counter on weekends and after school. After my freshman year of college, my dad let me work on the trucks as a plumbers helper. I unstopped sewers, laid pipe in ditches and changed out pipes under houses. My dad’s motive was to get me to see how hard plumbing was and learn the value of a dollar. After that first summer, I quit college and decided that I really wanted to be a plumber. At the end of the day, you truly feel a sense of accomplishment that you helped someone and that kind of gratitude only comes when you are a trained tradesperson.
What do you enjoy most about your business?
I really enjoy interacting with my customers and my employees. There is tremendous pride in owning a company that is 66 years old and carrying on the family legacy of professionalism and quality service and installation. READ MORE

PHCC Government Affairs Report on Capitol Hill
I'm not a contractor and in fact, I can't fix anything around my apartment (I do own a hammer and a screwdriver – though I don't know where they are). But this nation is all about people who can fix things…who can install and service equipment in homes and buildings that Riso can't. Soooooo….In thirteen words recently, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) sent a message to America…"I get it" (this is not an endorsement of Marco Rubio for President). BTW - the plumbing-heating-cooling industry gets it too Senator…welcome aboard. If you missed it during the recent Presidential debate – Senator Rubio said, "Welders make more money than philosophers. We need more welders and less philosophers" (he could have easily said plumbing and HVACR contractors). Which set-off a chain reaction of fact checking nerds who thought it more important to pick apart the statement, rather than embrace its meaning and adopt its principle and vision. Again, we get it, the nerds don't. In fact, before you sit down at the Thanksgiving table, feed on this from the legislative table – directly following Thanksgiving, Michael Copp, EVP-PHCC and Cindy Sheridan, COO-PHCC Educational Foundation (accompanied by Riso), have a series of meetings with Congressional leaders on career and technical education. Riding the ups and downs of the business is something you get used to but it can be a stressful life. Some have made it to the point that they are secure, at least removed from the everyday worry of the business. But it's a long rough road to get there for most. When a few of us formed NAPMA it was our hope that this association could become a resource and an island of hope for contractors and even vendors. Many of us get into this as techs and struggle with the business side as we grow. NAPMA has become pretty good at our political efforts, charity efforts, and technical training so now maybe it's time we start learning what business resources our members could use that we coltable.
