New Product Air Duct Guard is Now Available From Local Dealers
A Nashville, Tennessee based company; Air Duct Guard is now available at Ferguson - Nashville, Ed's Supply - Nashville and Modern Supply in Knoxville. Air Duct Guard is an easy and economical way to eliminate the need for a device that can securely block the dust and debris that can accumulate inside floor registers during the rough-in stages of construction. The Air Duct Guard (patent pending) is a compressible piece of foam that is oversized to fit the largest size duct opening. The life of the HVAC unit and potential health concerns for new homeowners will finally be addressed with this new product. Air Duct Guard was invented and designed by Jim Richie, a contractor who was fed up paying for duct cleaning services. Jim states, "As hard as I try to keep dust and debris from dropping into the floor vent opening, I just can't keep up with the amount of debris that accumulates." Jim explains that most conventional methods (duct tape, plastic, cardboard cutouts, plywood) eventually come off or have to be pulled off. This occurs way before project completion, with still a lot of work yet to be done. A light weight, flexible foam product, Air Duct Guard will stay inside the duct opening, even during the finishing stages of construction, including hardwood, tile and painting. READ MORE

122nd PMA Annual Conference
Jekyll Island Club June 26-29th

PMA is excited that the group selected not only a historic property with ties to the plumbing industry, historic Crane Cottage, but chose to bring the conference back to Georgia by selecting the Jekyll Island Club on Jekyll Island. Anyone in the plumbing industry is welcome to attend this event. "We've been asked why we continue to hold this meeting on the beach when it would be more expedient and economical to get a meeting room in Atlanta and get it done in a day", states Ellen Whitaker PMA's Executive Director. "While it would be efficient, we also know that being close to the "office" carries with it an expectation that you're still accessible for day to day business. When you're five hours away geographically, it allows you to focus on the event, stay in the moment and build relationships. Networking and conducting business in a relaxed environment like the beach with your family has its own benefits as well." Too often the work demands placed on business owners leave them with limited family time. Norton McMurray Manufacturing / NORMAC Celebrates 75 Years in Business
Chicago, circa 1938. Life was different then... a new car cost around $750, and a gallon of gas went for 10 cents. For three pennies, you could mail a first class letter. The Cubs were National League champions, FDR was president, and the world was teetering at the brink of another war. That same year, Charles E. Norton and Francis A. McMurray joined forces to become Norton McMurray — a company that designed and manufactured fittings to combat the corrosion problems affecting the natural gas piping beneath the city of Chicago. The fittings were a huge success, and NORMAC quickly became a well-known and trusted source for compression fittings used by the city utilities. NORMAC has been making trusted FLEX-Risers longer than anyone. In 1980, NORMAC worked with one of our customers to design the NORMAC FLEX-Riser, an anodeless gas riser used for transitioning polyethylene gas lines from below ground to above ground with no need for additional corrosion protection. In 1922, Dan and Mattie Smith and their 8 children inherited land in Haralson County, GA that Dan’s Great Grandfather had settled and succeeding generations had transformed into a working farm. Times had been difficult, crops had failed and Dan had been forced to obtain a mortgage on the farm. In 1923, he suddenly passed away, leaving Mattie with a mortgaged farm and 8 children. Within 2 years, the 3 oldest children left the farm to establish lives in Atlanta. The oldest son, Hoke, became a plumbing apprentice and by 1926 was a Master Plumber. The remaining children worked diligently and by 1926, they had paid the mortgage on Mattie’s Farm. The next 2 oldest children, Roy and George then joined Hoke in Atlanta and by 1940, both became Master Plumbers. Read More

For many folks, a Saturday morning bike ride means a 5 mile loop around the local greenway path, but for two Denver NC residents, that ride is usually a 50-60mile long cardio workout covering miles of scenic roads in Lincoln, Gaston and Catawba counties. The Plumbing News recently caught up with teammates Clyde Armstrong and Larry Haber, both who work in the plumbing industry, to find out more about why they ride and get some details of their upcoming ride for Multiple Sclerosis. The Blood Sweat & Gears MS Team formed three years ago when several riding friends decided that riding was a passion of theirs, but including some charity work into the mix would really add to the overall sense of a challenge and accomplishment. Recruitment began, and the team rode in 2011, 2012 and now will be challenging the grueling 2 day 200 mile ride with 18 members. In 2011 and 2012 the team was able to add over $35,000 in donations to the MS cause. Read More

Andy Ward Elected President of NAPMA
Being born into a plumbing family is a wonderfully terrible thing. For starters you always seem to have work. When you are a kid you are gopher. When you get older you become a helper and work on a truck and later you are running one. I am a third generation Master Plumber who did it old school when the test was half open and half closed. That is how I started and although being a doctors son might have made me a richer man, I am proud of my family and the trade. I started Republic Plumbing in 1988 as I felt like I wanted to be my own boss and have survived my own stupidity and a pretty good recession so far. I was elected president of the PHCC of Middle Tennessee many years ago and served there and for a short time as one of the Middle Tennessee representatives to the State PHCC Board of Directors. It became obvious to me that there needed to be an alternative to the PHCC that small plumbing contractors could afford. Up until that point the fee was as much as a set of tires and that many could not afford. So in an effort to get these contractors involved I and Jack Steakley, Lance Hornbuckle, and Don Seymore started The Nashville Area Plumbing and Mechanical Association. I have served as its president all these many years.Read More

Guest Editorial by Andy Ward
The old year is long gone and we are now fast approaching the Easter holidays, the leaves will soon make their beautiful return to the trees and flowers will again spring from the ground. We are now in the beginnings of spring here in the great State of Tennessee with all of the hope and warmth spring brings. This time of year it is appropriate and common to stop and reflect upon the past year and what this New Year might bring. Most of us can think of things that did not get done or ideas that we might explore in 2013. One of those thoughts for me as a repair shop is how to balance feeling like I treated people fairly and still charging enough to make a profit. It has always been a struggle in my mind and heart of feeling like your working for a customer and not looking at just how much you can extract from their bank account. Plumbers have always had the reputation of charging more than some might think fair. Read More
